Amritsar, December 25, 2024: SGPC Chief Harjinder Singh Dhami appeared before the Akal Takht on Wednesday to undergo ‘religious punishment’ for using derogatory language against former SGPC Chief Bibi Jagir Kaur.
Dhami, who had earlier expressed his willingness to seek forgiveness, met with Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh before being presented to the high priests.
As part of his penance, Dhami was instructed to wash dishes at the ‘langar hall’ and clean the shoes of devotees at the ‘jodha ghar’ for one hour each. After completing the tasks, Dhami recited prayers and performed ‘ardas’.
The controversy stemmed from an audio recording in which Dhami allegedly used offensive words against Kaur.
In response to the incident, Dhami not only apologised to Kaur directly but also voluntarily sought to atone for his actions by appearing before the Akal Takht.
Dhami’s actions follow a broader effort to maintain religious decorum within the Sikh community.
