SGPC Flags AI Platforms for ‘Wrong’ Depictions of Gurbani, Sikh History

Amritsar, Aug 1 — The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has raised strong objections to what it calls the widespread misrepresentation of Gurbani and Sikh history by Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms, calling it a serious concern that is hurting Sikh sentiments globally.

SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said the committee has received multiple complaints from both India and abroad about distorted depictions of Sikh religious texts and figures on various AI-powered platforms. The SGPC has sent a formal letter to several tech companies—naming ChatGPT, DeepSec, Grok, Gemini AI, Meta, Google, VO3, Descript, Runway ML, Pictori, Magisto, Invideo, DALL-E2, Midjourney, and DPAI—demanding corrective action.

“In the digital age, the use of AI to manipulate the images of Sikh Gurus and distort religious texts amounts to sacrilege,” Dhami said. “Several apps and platforms are presenting Gurbani and Sikh symbols inaccurately, which is deeply offensive to the Sikh community.”

He added that young people often turn to technology to understand their history and faith, but exposure to false or misleading content could harm their understanding of Sikh principles. “When AI platforms deliver incomplete or incorrect portrayals, they damage religious integrity,” he said.

Dhami has also appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene and formulate a regulatory framework to prevent the misuse of AI in matters related to religion. “We urge the central government to take this issue seriously and bring in a concrete policy to check such distortions,” he said.

The SGPC’s concerns come amid rising tensions over earlier threats to the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) and other forms of digital misrepresentation involving Sikh beliefs. The committee has made it clear that it views such misuses of technology as not just misinformation but a violation of sacred space and tradition.
