Amritsar, March 28: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sanctioned an estimated budget of ₹1,487.41 crore for the 2026–27 financial year during its general house session on Saturday. Held at Teja Singh Samundri Hall under the leadership of SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, the session saw members pass the financial roadmap amid traditional slogans of support.
General Secretary Sher Singh Mandwalla, who presented the figures, stated that the new budget represents a 7.28 percent rise over the previous year. Officials noted that the allocation has grown by ₹100.94 crore compared to the roughly ₹1,386 crore designated in the 2025–26 fiscal period. The assembly included prominent religious leaders, such as Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, acting Jathedar of Akal Takht, and Tek Singh, Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib.
Beyond financial approvals, the SGPC passed several significant resolutions, including a formal demand for the release of Sikh prisoners currently in various jails. The committee also called upon the government to present any draft legislation regarding sacrilege to the Sikh community for thorough consultation before moving forward.
“The house further urged the government to place the draft of the proposed legislation aimed at preventing sacrilege incidents before the Sikh community,” the committee declared in its official proceedings. While the budget received unanimous support, opposition member Mithu Singh Kahneke suggested that future sessions be extended to facilitate more comprehensive debates on the body’s fiscal management.
