Shimla, Nov 23: To ensure clean and contamination-free drinking water for residents of the state capital, the Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) has cleared a proposal to introduce ozone technology in its upcoming bulk water supply project from the Sutlej. Officials said this would be the first time the advanced purification method is being used in Himachal Pradesh.
SJPNL said the aim is to deliver safe potable water across Shimla and surrounding areas while reducing reliance on chlorination, which is known to have carcinogenic effects over long periods. Ozone water treatment — or ozonation — generates gas on site and diffuses it into the water to disinfect and remove impurities. Once infused, the ozone rapidly inactivates bacteria and viruses, while oxidising organic pollutants, unpleasant odours and minerals including iron and manganese.
A spokesperson for SJPNL said the board considered the technology after successful results were reported elsewhere in the country. “This is an advanced, proven system, and the results have been positive wherever it has been implemented,” the spokesperson noted, adding that a study conducted by Tata recommended the technology for Shimla’s water supply network. “Following the suggestion, the matter was taken up for consideration at the Board of Directors’ meeting,” the spokesperson added.
Officials said the new system is expected to enhance the reliability of water treatment for the city, particularly during periods of high contamination in the Sutlej. They added that work on integrating the technology into the bulk water supply project will begin after necessary approvals and procurement formalities are completed.
