Hoshiarpur, March 31 — The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested Sub-Inspector (SI) Raman Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Bulowal police station in Hoshiarpur district, and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurdeep Singh on Sunday for allegedly demanding a ₹1.5 lakh bribe, officials said.

The arrests followed an inquiry into an online complaint filed by a resident of Asalpur village on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line. The complainant alleged that after an FIR was registered against his nephew under the NDPS Act, the two policemen threatened to implicate his son under Section 29 of the same Act unless he paid the bribe.

According to the complaint, ASI Gurdeep Singh initially demanded ₹1.5 lakh on behalf of the SHO but later settled for ₹1 lakh after negotiations. The complainant submitted audio recordings of the bribe demand to the VB, which verified the claim before taking action.

Following legal consultation, a case was registered against the duo under Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 59 of the NDPS Act at the VB police station in Jalandhar Range.

“Both accused have been arrested and will be produced before the competent court tomorrow,” said Harpreet Singh Mander, SSP VB Jalandhar range. The investigation is ongoing.
