SURREY, CANADA, July 10 — A recently opened café owned by Indian comedian and actor Kapil Sharma came under attack late Wednesday night when unidentified gunmen opened fire at the premises in Surrey, British Columbia. No injuries have been reported so far.
The incident occurred at KAP’S CAFE, which Sharma and his wife Ginni Chatrath had soft-launched just days earlier in central Surrey. The café had already begun drawing significant attention from fans and locals, with social media posts showing packed interiors and a lively atmosphere.
While Canadian authorities have yet to issue an official statement, serious concerns were raised after Harjit Singh Laddi, an alleged operative of the banned terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and one of India’s most-wanted fugitives, reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) in India has long sought Laddi for his involvement in various terror-related cases. His reported involvement has escalated the severity of the investigation, with both Canadian and Indian intelligence agencies likely to coordinate on the matter.
“We are aware of the incident and law enforcement is actively investigating,” a police spokesperson in Surrey said. “Further details, including motive and confirmation of any group’s involvement, will be provided once the investigation progresses.”
As of Thursday afternoon, neither Kapil Sharma nor his representatives had issued a public response. Sources close to the actor confirmed he was not present at the café during the time of the shooting.
The attack comes amid heightened concerns over the activities of pro-Khalistan groups operating abroad. Canadian authorities are expected to enhance surveillance and security measures around Indian-owned businesses and cultural centers following the incident.
The café had quickly emerged as a local favorite, and Sharma’s surprise entrepreneurial move into the Canadian hospitality scene had drawn positive attention. The venue’s Instagram stories earlier this week showed enthusiastic crowds and a celebratory mood around its opening.
No arrests have been made so far, and surveillance footage from the area is being reviewed. Investigators are also probing the credibility of the BKI claim.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among Indo-Canadian communities, with calls for swift action to ensure safety and crack down on extremist elements.
