SYDNEY, October 27 — India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a Sydney hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following internal bleeding caused by a rib cage injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia on Saturday.
The injury occurred when Iyer sprinted backward from the point region to take a remarkable catch, dismissing Alex Carey. Witnesses said he appeared to clutch his left side immediately after completing the catch.
“He looked in visible pain as he returned to the dressing room,” said a source familiar with the incident. “Soon after, his vital signs began fluctuating, prompting the BCCI medical team to act quickly.”
Team doctors and the physio rushed Iyer to the hospital where scans revealed internal bleeding. “Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately,” the source told PTI, requesting anonymity.
The source further noted that Iyer will remain under medical observation for between two and seven days depending on his recovery. “It was a close call. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” the source added.
The 31-year-old batsman is expected to spend at least a week in Sydney before being cleared to travel back to India. He is not part of India’s T20 squad scheduled to play next month.
Doctors are yet to determine how long Iyer will be out of action. “Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to give a timeline for his return to competitive cricket,” the source said.
