New Delhi, Nov 1: India ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital after a minor medical procedure for a spleen and rib cage injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia on October 25. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday said the 30-year-old batter is stable and recovering well.
In a statement, the BCCI noted, “Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from the hospital and is now stable. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his progress.”
The injury occurred when Iyer attempted a difficult running catch to dismiss Australia’s Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling, resulting in a blunt abdominal impact. “Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on 25th October 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement.
Saikia added that the injury was promptly identified and treated. “The bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same,” he said.
The BCCI expressed gratitude to the medical teams involved in Iyer’s treatment. “The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment,” Saikia mentioned.
Iyer will remain in Sydney for follow-up consultations before returning to India once he is deemed fit to fly. According to the board, he is likely to be sidelined for at least two months.
