MANSA, June 10: In a bid to stop the screening of a documentary on late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, his father Balkaur Singh is set to file a petition in a Mansa court today, seeking an immediate stay on the programme scheduled for June 11—Moosewala’s birth anniversary.
The documentary, reportedly titled “Investigative Documentary on Sidhu Moosewala,” is slated to be screened by a foreign public broadcaster at an event in Juhu, Mumbai.
Family sources confirmed that Balkaur Singh completed all legal formalities on Monday and is requesting the court to direct the broadcaster to suspend the screening. He has already served a legal notice to the broadcaster and lodged formal complaints with the Maharashtra Police, including a follow-up appeal to halt the airing of the film.
The late singer’s father has raised serious objections, alleging that the documentary contains sensitive, unpublished material and unauthorised personal accounts, which include commentary on the still-active criminal investigation into Moosewala’s murder. “This documentary violates our legal rights, including privacy, and disrespects my son’s dignity after death,” Balkaur has reportedly stated in the complaint.
He further argued that the broadcast could trigger public unrest and disrupt the legal process. The broadcaster’s legal team has acknowledged receipt of the notice but has requested a 10-day period to respond formally.
Sidhu Moosewala, whose real name was Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, was shot dead in Jawaharke village near Mansa on May 29, 2022. His murder is currently under investigation, with several suspects linked to organised crime.
Despite the legal row, the Moosewala family plans to commemorate his birth anniversary with the release of an extended play (EP) featuring some of his unreleased songs on Wednesday.
