Rod Laver Arena, 26 January 2025: Jannik Sinner captured his second consecutive Australian Open men’s singles title on Sunday, defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets. The 23-year-old Italian claimed a decisive 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-3 victory in the final at Rod Laver Arena, marking his third Grand Slam title and reinforcing his dominance as the world’s No. 1-ranked player.
Sinner’s performance was commanding from the start, breaking Zverev’s serve late in the first set and sealing it with an ace. The second set was more competitive, as both players held serve until Sinner edged out Zverev in a tense tiebreaker. Sinner maintained control in the third set, fending off all break points and closing the match on his serve.
With the victory, Sinner became the youngest player since Jim Courier (1992-93) to win back-to-back Australian Open titles and the first Italian to achieve three Grand Slam victories. Reflecting on his achievement, Sinner said, “Winning here for the second time is an incredible feeling, especially in a match as competitive as this.”
The final showcased the rivalry between the world’s top two players, marking the first Australian Open men’s final between No. 1 and No. 2 seeds since Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in 2019. However, Sinner’s edge over Zverev was evident. The German, ranked No. 2, remains winless in Grand Slam finals, with this loss adding to defeats in the 2020 U.S. Open and 2024 French Open.
Sinner’s rapid ascent to prominence comes after he was exonerated last year from a doping investigation. His rise mirrors Rafael Nadal’s achievement of winning consecutive Grand Slam titles after his maiden major victory. Sinner now joins an elite group as the eighth man in the Open era to begin his career 3-0 in Grand Slam finals.
Sinner’s victory reinforces his position as the game’s leading force, maintaining his top spot in the rankings since June.
