MOHALI, June 2— As part of its ongoing crackdown under the ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign, Mohali Police arrested six individuals in three separate operations across Kharar and recovered 263.9 grams of heroin, Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans said on Sunday.
The arrested accused were identified as Gagandeep Singh, Sandeep Kumar, and Dimple — all from Ferozepur — along with Jagjir Singh and Sinder Singh from Fazilka, and Jivan Singh. All six have been remanded to police custody for further investigation.
In the first case, a checkpoint was set up near Gurdwara Sahib in Sunny Enclave, close to Green Market Chowk. Police intercepted a suspicious white Hyundai Xcent taxi driven by Jagjir Singh. When flagged down, Singh attempted to flee but was overpowered. His co-passenger, Sinder Singh, was also taken into custody. Officers recovered 100 grams of heroin from the duo.
In a second operation, acting on a tip-off, police intercepted three men on a motorcycle near Mamupur bridge. Gagandeep Singh, Sandeep Kumar, and Dimple were found in possession of 139 grams of heroin.
In a third incident, Jivan Singh was arrested near Phase 8 after he attempted to avoid a police patrol. Upon searching his belongings, police recovered 24.9 grams of heroin.
“These arrests are a result of our sustained anti-drug drive in the district,” SSP Hans said. “The Mohali Police will continue to take strict action against drug peddlers and anti-social elements.”
Opium Trafficking Network Busted
In a parallel crackdown on a larger narcotics network, the anti-narcotics cell dismantled an opium smuggling operation spanning Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, arresting three suspects.
The probe began on May 29 when Punjab-based supplier Sunil Kumar was nabbed with opium in Chandimandir. He was remanded to two-day custody, during which he named his source — Hariom from Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.
Hariom was arrested on May 31, and further questioning led to the arrest of Deepak, a resident of Rampur, who was supplying opium to Hariom. Both were presented in court on Sunday and remanded to four-day police custody.
They have been booked under Sections 18 and 29 of the NDPS Act at the Chandimandir police station.
“The investigation is ongoing to dismantle the entire supply chain and identify all links, including top-level traffickers,” an official from the anti-narcotics cell stated.
