Snowfall in Kashmir upper reaches, rain continues across plains

SRINAGAR, Dec 21, 2025 — Fresh weather activity swept across Jammu and Kashmir early Sunday, bringing light snowfall to higher reaches while intermittent rain continued across the Kashmir plains, officials said.

Popular tourist resorts Gulmarg and Sonamarg received about one to two inches of fresh snowfall, while Sadhna Top in north Kashmir recorded around six inches, indicating stronger cloud activity over the higher frontier mountains, officials said.

Plains across the Valley, including Srinagar, witnessed light rain from the early morning hours, keeping temperatures low and sustaining cold conditions.

“The system is expected to strengthen during the day, increasing the chances of more widespread rain and snow,” an official of the Meteorological Department said. “Precipitation will largely remain in the form of rain in the plains.”

The MeT office said snowfall in a few low-lying areas cannot be ruled out if showers persist into the late afternoon or evening and temperatures fall sufficiently.

“If cloud cover thickens and sustains, there is a possibility of snowfall at isolated places even in lower areas,” the official said.

Higher reaches of north, south and central Kashmir are likely to receive a moderate spell of snowfall as the system peaks, the MeT office added.

Authorities said the situation is being monitored, though no major disruptions had been reported so far.
