Tarn Taran, Feb 18: The family of an NRI groom has stepped forward to correct the narrative regarding a viral wedding video from Punjab, asserting that claims of an Rs 8.5 crore cash shower are entirely false. Relatives and event staff confirmed that while money was used in the celebration, the sum was a small fraction of what was reported on the internet.
The controversy stemmed from a video recorded during a wedding in Tarn Taran, where guests were filmed showering the bride and the dance floor with currency notes. As the clip moved through various social media channels, the estimated value of the cash rose to several crores, leading to intense public scrutiny of the February 14 event.
Sikander Singh, whose brother traveled from Australia for the nuptials, maintained that the family celebrated within reasonable bounds. He affirmed that the actual amount showered was roughly Rs 2 lakh and declared that the online reports had moved far beyond reality. The family noted that the tradition is common in the region and was not intended to be a record-breaking display of wealth.
The DJ and event management team corroborated this statement, stating that the total volume of notes—which included some US dollars—amounted to about Rs 4 lakh. “We celebrated by showering money, but it was around Rs 2 lakh,” Singh stated, dismissing the viral claims as baseless exaggerations.
Despite the clarification, the video has continued to generate a high volume of engagement. Supporters of the family declared the event a spirited celebration of a homecoming, while critics maintained that such public displays of cash contribute to a culture of extravagance.
