Chandigarh, March 8: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha witnessed a focused debate regarding the proposed solid waste processing plant for Mohali during the question hour on Sunday. MLA Kulwant Singh raised inquiries concerning the status of the 50-acre site in Samghouli village, noting that while 39 acres were acquired for over Rs 33 crore years ago, the facility remains non-operational.
Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora directly said that the administration remains committed to transforming Mohali into a city of international caliber.
He mentioned that although previous land acquisitions faced legal hurdles in court, a new proposal is currently being drafted to resolve the bottleneck.
The minister asserted that a final decision regarding the commencement of the plant would be taken as soon as possible.
The project was originally designed to manage waste from several clusters, including Derabassi, Zirakpur, Kharar, and Morinda. MLA Kulwant Singh maintained that the lack of a functional dumping ground or processing unit hinders the city’s development.
He noted that despite the significant financial investment made during the initial land award in 2017, the specific actions taken to operationalize the site had not been fully clarified.
This discussion took place as Finance Minister Harpal Cheema prepared to present the Punjab government’s final budget of its five-year tenure.
The minister signed budget copies this morning for a fiscal plan expected to exceed Rs 2.50 lakh crore. Government representatives stated that the budget will focus on fulfilling the state’s long-term development goals.
