AMRITSAR, July 16— The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) received a threatening email on Monday, warning that Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), would be “blown up” using explosives. The alarming message marked the third consecutive day of such threats and triggered an immediate and intense response from law enforcement and security agencies.
According to SGPC officials, the email — sent to the committee’s official address — contained a specific warning of an explosive attack. While the exact contents of the threat have not been made public for security reasons, officials confirmed that the message caused serious concern.
In response, Amritsar Police, bomb disposal squads, and the Border Security Force (BSF) were deployed to the temple complex. All visitors are now being subjected to strict security checks, and surveillance has been stepped up across the premises.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami confirmed the threat and expressed deep concern over the repeated targeting of the holiest Sikh shrine. “This is the third threatening email we’ve received since July 14,” Dhami said.
“Earlier messages were sent from fake IDs, including one impersonating the Chief Minister of Kerala and a former Chief Justice. Today’s email came from an address under the name ‘Asif Kapoor’ and was also sent to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.”
Calling the threats an attack on the Sikh community’s faith and its institutions, Dhami pointed to a disturbing pattern. “Sri Harmandir Sahib has already seen destruction in 1984. It is painful that some elements continue to target the sacred site. The teachings of our Gurus promote peace and universal brotherhood, but it seems there are forces that are troubled by that very message.”
Punjab Police have confirmed that cyber teams are actively investigating the origin of the emails. “We are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. Every threat is being verified, and efforts are underway to track down those responsible,” said a senior police official.
Following the threat, security around the revered shrine in Amritsar was significantly tightened. A bomb disposal squad was deployed and additional police personnel were stationed throughout the temple complex as a precautionary measure.
While no explosive devices have been found so far, authorities have tightened the security cordon and urged the public to remain vigilant but calm. The Golden Temple remains open to devotees under close watch.
