Sohana, May 6: A 62-year-old stamp vendor, identified as Navchetan Singh Rana, reportedly died by suicide after shooting himself in the head at his office in Sohana around 10:30 am on Tuesday.

Rana, a resident of Phase 1, had left home for work after breakfast, according to family members.

Police said the incident occurred shortly after he asked his female office assistant to step out for a few minutes, telling her he wished to offer prayers. Moments later, a gunshot was heard, and neighbors rushed to the scene, only to find him lying in a pool of blood.

Doctors declared him dead on the spot. His body was later shifted to Phase 6 Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. A forensic team was called in to examine the office and collect evidence.

While the motive remains under investigation, a police official said a suicide note had been recovered from the premises. “We have retrieved a note and are verifying its contents. The cause behind the extreme step is yet to be confirmed,” the officer said.

Family members told police that Navchetan had been showing signs of depression for some time. A revolver, believed to be licensed, was found at the scene.

Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
