Mohali, March 6: The Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued a new tariff order that significantly lowers electricity prices for all consumers starting next month. The decision, coming just months before the state assembly elections, reduces tariffs by 50 paise to Rs 1.50 per unit across different brackets.
Domestic consumers will see the most notable change, with rates falling by up to Rs 1.55 per unit. Business and industrial hubs are also set for relief, with decreases reaching up to 75 paise per unit. Chairman Vishwajit Khanna declared that the commission has worked to keep the average supply cost at Rs 6.15 per kWh, a full rupee lower than the previous cycle.
Regarding the policy framework, Khanna asserted that the new rates adhere to national guidelines. He stated that the cross-subsidies remain within the required 20 per cent threshold. The chairman affirmed that the new pricing structure is designed to be sustainable while providing immediate economic benefit to the citizenry.
The announcement included a record-low rate for electric vehicle charging to encourage green mobility. By lowering the cost of supply, the government anticipates a lighter subsidy load on the state exchequer. Authorities maintained that the primary goal of the revised 2026-27 order is to pass on a total benefit of nearly Rs 7,852 crore to the residents of Punjab.
