The Punjab Government launched a 10-day urban cleanliness drive titled ‘Mission Clean Punjab’, scheduled to run from August 29 to September 7. Centred on the theme ‘Clean Punjab, Proud Punjab’, the campaign involves cabinet ministers, MLAs, mayors, municipal councillors, and administrative officials conducting field visits each morning to monitor sanitation operations.
The campaign focuses on identifying and clearing designated Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) where waste repeatedly accumulates. Municipal teams have been tasked with clearing these locations and establishing measures to prevent recurring dumping.
Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains launched the drive in Nangal, Sri Anandpur Sahib, participating in sanitation activities and holding discussions with municipal workers and residents. Minister Bains maintained that maintaining urban cleanliness requires active involvement from residents, local shopkeepers, and community groups alongside sanitation personnel. He affirmed that the initiative aims to establish a structured sanitation monitoring framework rather than functioning solely as a temporary cleanup drive.
In Kotkapura, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan initiated local drive operations, recognizing sanitation workers for their service before joining site cleaning activities. Speaker Sandhwan stated that secondary waste collection centres and dumping spots across Faridkot district are slated for systematic clearance. To increase administrative transparency, official lists detailing deployed sanitation workers and supervisors will be uploaded to the state portal.
Elected officials led similar efforts across various districts. Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh conducted cleanliness operations at Thapar Chowk in Patiala, noting the direct relationship between proper waste management and vector control. Cabinet Minister Mohinder Bhagat participated in Jalandhar, while Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO oversaw activities in Jandiala Guru. Additional drives were initiated by Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond in Khanna, MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa in Zirakpur, MLA Dr. Ajay Gupta in Amritsar, and MLA Advocate Lakhbir Singh Rai in Sirhind.
To support administrative reporting, the government encouraged citizens to submit photographs of uncleared waste through the M-Seva mobile application, which issues tracking IDs for site clearance.
