Khartoum, 26 February 2025 — The death toll from a Sudanese military plane crash in Omdurman has risen to at least 46, with 10 others injured, officials said Wednesday.
The Antonov aircraft crashed Tuesday while taking off from the Wadi Sayidna air base, north of Omdurman, the military said. The cause remains unclear. The plane crashed over a civilian house in the city’s Karrari district, indicating casualties on the ground.
Sudan has been gripped by civil war since 2023, with fighting between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) devastating urban areas and leading to widespread atrocities. The conflict has intensified in recent months, with government forces gaining ground.
The RSF, which controls much of Darfur, claimed responsibility for downing a military aircraft on Monday in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur.
