Tarn Taran, August 18: A police operation to apprehend an alleged drug operative in Jagatpura village ended in gunfire after the suspect attempted to evade arrest by attacking officers, officials said. The accused sustained injuries during retaliatory firing by the police team and was subsequently admitted to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Balwinder Singh stated that a police party had moved to arrest Gurpinder Singh, alias Pindu, a resident of Emma Kalan, following specific intelligence regarding his involvement in local drug distribution networks.

Police officers spotted the suspect near the government primary school in Jagatpura and moved to surround him. Upon being cornered, the suspect reportedly threw chilli powder into the eyes of the personnel and fired shots at the team before fleeing the scene.

Sub-Inspector Jugraj Singh, SHO, Chabal, affirmed that the police force retaliated in self-defence, resulting in the suspect being shot. Despite sustaining injuries, the accused initially managed to slip away from the spot before being traced and shifted to the hospital for treatment.

Following the confrontation, the Chabal police registered a case against the accused under Sections 109, 132, and 221 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), alongside relevant provisions under the NDPS Act and the Arms Act.

Local police teams have maintained heightened surveillance in Jagatpura village following recent public concern over drug peddling in the area. Official measures and patrolling have been stepped up across the sector to maintain law and order.
