Tarn Taran, Nov 30, 2025: After a night-long hearing, the Tarn Taran district court ordered the release of Kanchanpreet Kaur from police custody in the early hours of Sunday. Judicial Magistrate Pankaj Verma pronounced the verdict at 4 a.m., bringing visible relief to Akali leaders and workers.
Flanked by senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders, including Virsa Singh Valtoha, Kanchanpreet expressed her happiness and faith in the judiciary. “I am grateful to the court for delivering justice,” she said.
Kanchanpreet was arrested by Chabal police on Friday. She is the daughter of SAD leader Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, who recently contested the Tarn Taran assembly by-poll unsuccessfully.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the police to hand over Kanchanpreet to judicial custody on Saturday, asking authorities to wait until her lawyers arrived at the district court by 8 p.m. The state government filed an application through the office of the advocate-general, and arguments began only at 10 p.m. Proceedings concluded around 2 a.m., with the release order issued at 4 a.m.
SAD leaders called the arrest politically motivated, terming it a “vengeful act against an innocent woman.” Meanwhile, Kanchanpreet’s lawyer, Arshdeep Kaler, and party leaders alleged that an unidentified woman disguised as Kanchanpreet was presented in court to mislead the media and public.
Valtoha later announced that Kanchanpreet will contest the upcoming Zila Parishad elections from the Kasel zone in Tarn Taran.
