Hoshiarpur, March 31: Authorities in Hoshiarpur’s Nurpur Jattan village have heightened security and launched an investigation after unidentified individuals vandalized a statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar. The incident, which occurred late at night, involved the use of blunt objects to deface the statue’s features and shatter the protective glass panels and lighting systems surrounding the monument.

The site had previously been equipped with these security measures following a similar act of vandalism in June 2025. In that earlier instance, the statue was damaged and discovered alongside pro-Khalistan graffiti, which had prompted local concerns regarding communal stability.

Sarpanch Shingara Ram confirmed the extent of the damage after residents gathered at the site when the act was discovered.

“The statue has been desecrated, and the protective arrangements have also been destroyed,” Ram affirmed. “People are upset, and we have informed the authorities.”

Punjab Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker and Garhshankar MLA Jai Krishan Rouri visited the village alongside police officials to monitor the situation. Rouri declared that strict action would be taken against the perpetrators and issued a public appeal for the maintenance of peace and communal harmony.

Law enforcement officials are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify those responsible. While patrolling has been intensified to prevent escalation, officials stated that anyone attempting to disturb the peace through rumors or provocative social media content will face legal consequences.
