NEW DELHI, Dec 28 — Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday echoed party colleague Digvijaya Singh’s call for organisational strengthening, a day after Singh’s remarks praising the BJP-RSS structure sparked political debate.

Speaking at the Congress party’s 140th foundation day event at its Indira Bhawan headquarters, Tharoor said there was little disagreement on the need to rebuild the party’s organisational base.

“The organisation should be strengthened, there is no doubt,” Tharoor said when asked about Singh’s comments.

Singh had stirred controversy on Saturday after praising the BJP-RSS organisational network, sharing an old photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and referring to his rise from a grassroots worker to chief minister and prime minister.

Singh said the Congress needed to urgently focus on strengthening itself at the grassroots to take on the ruling BJP and remove it from power.

Tharoor, who was seated next to Singh during Sunday’s function, downplayed speculation about internal discussions over the remarks.

“We keep talking with each other. We are friends and talk to each other,” he said.

Marking the party’s foundation day, Tharoor said the occasion was significant for reflecting on the Congress’ legacy.

“It is the 140th foundation day of the Congress. It is a very important event for the party,” he said. “It is a day in which we look back on our remarkable history and contributions to the nation.”

In a post on X, Tharoor said the Congress had played a central role in India’s freedom struggle and democratic journey since its founding in 1885.
