MANSA, MAY 29– On the third death anniversary of late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, his father Balkaur Singh announced that he will contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections from the Mansa constituency.
“I want to seek justice for my son from within the system,” said Balkaur Singh, expressing his intent to enter electoral politics to fight crime, restore public safety, and give voice to those being silenced.
Singh, who has often voiced frustration with the AAP-led Punjab government, said he was deeply dissatisfied with the state’s inaction against gang violence. He specifically criticized Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for “failing to deliver on the arrest of Goldy Brar,” the alleged mastermind behind Moosewala’s killing, who remains at large.
“This government made promises, but where is Goldy Brar?” Singh asked. “Justice has been delayed, and the people deserve better.”
Sidhu Moosewala, a prominent voice in Punjabi music, was shot dead on May 29, 2022, in Mansa’s Jawarhke village while driving his Thar. His death triggered public outrage and exposed the extent of gangster involvement in Punjab.
On Thursday, a religious service was held at his cremation site in Musa village, where thousands of fans gathered. The memorial now includes a statue of the late singer, which has been recently restored for the event.
Moosewala himself had contested the 2022 Assembly elections on a Congress ticket from Mansa, losing heavily in the AAP wave that swept Punjab.
The announcement by Balkaur Singh comes amid renewed attention to the murder case. On May 24, retired SHO Angrej Singh—the original investigating officer and a key witness—died after a prolonged illness. He had missed a court appearance just a day earlier, citing health issues.
“Angrej Singh had first-hand knowledge of the investigation,” a senior police official said. “With his passing, the case may face hurdles, as any replacement will have to start from scratch.”
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has filed five chargesheets so far against 32 accused, including gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Canada-based Goldy Brar. In May 2024, the Mansa Sessions Court framed charges against 27 of them under various sections, including murder. However, Brar remains out of reach, and no charges have been formally framed against him yet.
Two key eyewitnesses—Gurwinder and Gurpreet, who were with Moosewala at the time of the shooting—have identified four shooters: Priyavart Fauji, Ankit Sersa, Deepak Mundi, and Kashish alias Kuldeep. They also named Jagroop Singh alias Roopa and Manpreet Singh alias Mannu Kussa, who were later killed in a police encounter.
Gurwinder also identified Sandeep Kekra, who allegedly passed real-time updates to Brar. Kekra is believed to have taken selfies with Moosewala just before his departure, aiding the assassins.
Balkaur Singh is scheduled to testify in court on June 4. As the legal case continues, his political entry is likely to intensify the public debate around the justice process, accountability, and the larger issue of law and order in Punjab.
