Chandigarh, Oct 22 — Police personnel across the tricity paid solemn tribute to their fallen comrades on Police Martyrs’ Day, observed annually to honour officers who died in the line of duty. Ceremonies were held in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula on Tuesday, with senior officials leading wreath-laying observances and families of martyrs in attendance.
At the Sector 17 police station ground in Chandigarh, Director General of Police (DGP) Sagar Preet Hooda led the commemorative parade and laid wreaths at the Martyrs’ Memorial Site. The gathering observed a two-minute silence in memory of officers who made the supreme sacrifice between September 1, 2024, and August 31, 2025. During this period, 191 police officers — including state and paramilitary personnel — lost their lives while serving the nation.
Among them were three members of the Chandigarh Police: head constable Sukhjinder Singh, constable Sukhdarshan Singh, and home guard volunteer Rajesh Kumar. “Their commitment towards public safety and justice will always remain an inspiration for generations of police personnel,” DGP Hooda said, recalling the courage displayed by officers during counterterrorism operations in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The event also recognized officers who died in road accidents while performing duty. Head constable Sukhjinder Singh succumbed to injuries in Amritsar while executing warrants, while constable Sukhdarshan Singh and volunteer Rajesh Kumar lost their lives on March 13 during a night check at the Chandigarh-Zirakpur entry point.
Police Martyrs’ Day, first observed in 1959 after ten CRPF jawans were ambushed and killed by Chinese troops in Ladakh, was also remembered for its historical significance.
In Mohali, tributes were paid at the District Administrative Complex, where Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harmandeep Singh Hans and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Komal Mittal placed wreaths at the Police Martyrs’ Pictorial Memorial. “Their bravery and dedication will continue to inspire generations,” said SSP Hans, while DC Mittal highlighted the police’s crucial role during crises.
In Panchkula, Haryana DGP OP Singh led the remembrance ceremony at the Police Martyrs Memorial in Police Lines. Offering condolences to the bereaved families, Singh acknowledged the emotional and financial challenges faced by them. He said the Haryana Police ensures that families of martyrs receive both financial support and government employment “to uphold their dignity and well-being.”
