Trump Lauds India-Pakistan Ceasefire, Vows Talks on Kashmir

WASHINGTON, May 11 — US President Donald Trump on Sunday praised the leadership of India and Pakistan for agreeing to a ceasefire, calling the move a “historic and heroic decision” that averted potential large-scale devastation.

India and Pakistan reached an agreement Saturday to halt all military operations along the Line of Control and International Border, following a sharp escalation in tensions. The ceasefire took effect at 5 p.m., as confirmed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

“The directors general of military operations from both sides have agreed to cease all hostilities on land, air, and sea,” Misri said in a brief statement.

Trump, posting on his social media platform Truth Social, said, “I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan for having the strength, wisdom, and fortitude to fully know and understand that it was time to stop the current aggression that could have led to the death and destruction of so many, and so much.”

Referring to the rising threat of conflict after recent military strikes, Trump remarked, “Millions of good and innocent people could have died! Your legacy is greatly enhanced by your brave actions.”

In the aftermath of a terror attack in Pahalgam, India launched strikes on terror launch pads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The retaliation raised fears of further escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

Trump credited the United States for facilitating the breakthrough, saying, “I am proud that the USA was able to help you arrive at this historic and heroic decision.”

The US President also indicated plans for deeper economic engagement with the region. “While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade substantially with both of these great Nations,” he wrote, adding, “I will work with you both to see if, after a ‘thousand years,’ a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir.”

“God bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!!!” Trump concluded.

The ceasefire is seen as a rare moment of accord between the two countries, whose relations have long been strained by border disputes and militant violence.

Whether the agreement marks the beginning of sustained peace remains uncertain, but the global community has responded with cautious optimism.
