SANGRUR, November 24 — Two young men were killed and three others were injured late Saturday when a speeding BMW overturned and caught fire after colliding with a truck on the Dirba-Patran road, according to police. Officers said the crash took place near the Kakuwala picket around 11 p.m., when the car allegedly attempted to overtake the truck while travelling from Dirba towards Patran.
Police said the driver, identified as Sunet Singh, lost control during the overtake. The vehicle vaulted over the divider, flipped several times and went up in flames moments later, causing fatal injuries to two of the occupants. “All of the occupants in the car were very young, between 18 and 25 years,” Dirba Deputy Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur noted, adding that preliminary findings show the car was moving at high speed at the time of the impact.
Dilshad Khan and Armanjot Singh died on the spot, while the three others — Jaskaran Singh, Jaskaran Singh alias Jassi, and the driver, Sunet — were rushed to Patran’s government hospital. Police said Jaskaran and Sunet sustained serious injuries and were later referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala for further treatment.
DSP Kaur said the truck driver escaped, leaving his vehicle behind. Police have registered a case under sections 281, 106, 324(4) and 125(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against an unidentified accused. “The truck driver fled soon after the accident,” she said, adding that efforts are underway to trace him as the investigation continues.
