Uncertainty over Sarabjit Kaur’s return from Pakistan

Chandigarh, Jan 7: Confusion continues over the whereabouts of Sarabjit Kaur alias Noor Hussain, an Indian national who travelled to Pakistan with Sikh pilgrims last year and later converted to Islam and married a Pakistani citizen, as her return to India remains uncertain despite claims of deportation.

While reports in Pakistani media and on social platforms suggested that Sarabjit was being sent back to India via the Wagah border, she has not crossed over even two days after those claims surfaced.

According to Pakistani daily Dawn, authorities attempted to deport Sarabjit on Monday, but the process could not be completed due to the closure of the Wagah-Attari border. “Pakistani authorities failed to deport Indian national Sarabjit Kaur due to the closure of the border,” the report stated.

Sarabjit, 48, had travelled to Pakistan in November 2025 as part of a Sikh jatha to mark Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary. During her stay, she converted to Islam on November 5, married Lahore resident Nasir Hussain, and changed her name to Noor Hussain.

Pakistani authorities initiated deportation proceedings after her visa expired on November 13. Sources said the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) took her into custody to facilitate her handover to India at Wagah.

However, the process hit hurdles after Sarabjit reportedly refused to return, claiming her life could be at risk in India. Punjab Rangers officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “The deportation could not be completed due to the closure of the border.”

Meanwhile, Punjab (Pakistan) Minority Affairs Minister Ramesh Singh Arora claimed that all legal formalities had been completed and that Sarabjit had been sent back to India, a statement that has not been independently confirmed.

Adding to the uncertainty, Hindustan Times reported that Pakistan’s legal agencies have temporarily halted deportation due to multiple petitions pending before the Lahore High Court. The report said Sarabjit is currently in Lahore police custody and has been kept in a safe house, with images circulating on social media.

Her husband Nasir Hussain and Sarabjit have approached the Lahore High Court alleging police harassment, while a counter-petition filed by former MLA Mahendra Pal Singh seeks her immediate deportation for violating visa conditions.

As of now, Pakistani authorities have not issued any official clarification on Sarabjit Kaur’s exact status or location.
