New Delhi/Gurugram, July 24: Activist Sonam Wangchuk concluded his 26-day hunger strike in New Delhi on July 24 after receiving official assurances from the administration regarding his core demands. Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Minister of State for PMO Jitendra Singh visited Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram around midnight on Thursday to convey the government’s commitments.
“I finally broke my fast after 26 days following extended negotiations on various conditions and in view of possible violence,” Wangchuk stated on social media while confirming the presence of ministerial representatives and senior leaders from the Apex Body of Leh, Ladakh.
During the meeting, officials assured that no legal cases would be filed against peaceful demonstrators involved in recent protests or the July 20 march to Parliament. The government also indicated that Parliament would hold structured discussions on paper leaks, alongside considering suitable compensation for the families of students affected by exam-related incidents. While expressing relief over the activist’s decision, the Cockroach Janta Party affirmed that its separate demonstration at Jantar Mantar would persist until Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan steps down.
