Mohali, August 25: Police arrested a wanted criminal on Monday after a shootout near Gharuan village in Kharar, linked to an armed carjacking of a luxury car near Jhanjeri on August 17.

Bhupinder Singh, a Ludhiana resident, sustained a bullet injury to his right leg during the encounter and was shifted to Kharar Sub-Divisional Hospital, officials said.

Police said Bhupinder, along with three accomplices — Pargat Singh, Taranjeet Singh Soni, and another person from Malerkotla — allegedly snatched a luxury vehicle at gunpoint from two CGC Jhanjeri employees, Tara Singh and Tushar Sharma, on the Landran-Sirhind road near Jhanjeri.

Mohali SP Saurav Jindal said three of the accused had already been arrested in Malerkotla. “On Monday, Inspector Gabbar Singh received a tip-off about Bhupinder’s movement on a bike,” he noted.

He explained that when police signalled Bhupinder to stop, he fled, and during the chase, his bike fell beneath a bridge. “When asked to surrender, Bhupinder fired at the police team. One bullet hit a police vehicle. Our team retaliated, injuring him, and he was then arrested,” the SP said.

Following the arrest, police recovered the stolen luxury car, another vehicle used in the crime, a pistol, and narcotic substances from Bhupinder, officials added.

A case under the Arms Act and NDPS Act has been registered at the Sadar Kharar police station, and further investigation is underway.
