CHANDIGARH, Sept. 2 — Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Tuesday demanded that the floods wreaking havoc across Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir be declared a “national calamity,” while also questioning the absence of top leaders during the crisis.
In a sharp attack on the Centre, Warring asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not visited the flood-ravaged areas despite recently returning from the SCO summit. “Shouldn’t the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji visit Punjab’s flood-hit areas?” Warring posted on X. “Since he is back from the SCO summit, we hope he will pay a visit to the flood-affected areas of Punjab and announce an immediate flood relief package for the state.”
He argued that the magnitude of destruction justified an urgent central response. “The devastation caused by the floods warrants their declaration as a national calamity,” he noted, pointing out that large parts of northern India were still reeling under water.
The Congress leader further accused the Punjab government of failing in relief and rehabilitation measures. He said the administration had “completely failed in providing adequate help” to affected families, leaving people to suffer without timely support.
Warring also trained his guns on the Aam Aadmi Party leadership. “Where are Shri Arvind Kejriwal ji and Shri Manish Sisodia ji?” he asked, recalling Sisodia’s past claims of winning Punjab and accusing the party of being absent and silent during the disaster.
