CHANDIGARH, November 19: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Tuesday expressed concern over recent targeted attacks in the state, saying the incidents required careful attention to ensure peace and trust within the community.
In a statement, Warring said the involvement of gangsters in incidents described as “targeted killings” and subsequent public claims around them was an “unsettling trend” that needed to be addressed early. He urged the state government and Punjab Police to “take timely action” to prevent any escalation.
Referring to the killing of RSS volunteer Naveen Arora in Ferozepur, for which a self-proclaimed group had taken responsibility, Warring said that criminal acts should not be linked to any religious identity. He also mentioned the recent attack on a Shiv Sena leader.
Warring said Punjab has a long tradition of communal harmony and expressed confidence that people would continue to uphold it. He cautioned, however, that such incidents should not be taken lightly. “These situations can create avoidable tension if not handled with sensitivity,” he said.
He also remarked that he expected a more visible response from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, saying the government’s engagement on the issue would help reassure the public.
