Mohali, July 3 — A week after a 30-year-old man from Lalru allegedly set himself on fire, police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against his wife and three of her family members. The man, who suffered critical burn injuries in the June 25 incident, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.
Following his death, Lalru police recorded the statement of the victim’s father, who claimed that his son had been under constant mental harassment by his wife and in-laws. He alleged that repeated disputes over trivial matters had pushed his son to take the extreme step.
Acting on the complaint, police registered a case against four persons under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with abetment of suicide.
“We have booked four people based on the initial complaint. Further action will be taken after verifying all facts,” said Lalru Station House Officer (SHO) Simran Singh. He added that the investigation is ongoing and statements from additional witnesses will be collected.
Police said the victim was rushed to a hospital immediately after the incident, but despite intensive care, he could not be saved.
