Ferozpur, April 27 — The wife of BSF jawan Purnam Sahu, detained by Pakistan Rangers after inadvertently crossing the international border, said Sunday she plans to visit Ferozepur, Punjab, to meet senior officers and learn about efforts to secure her husband’s return.
“I am under severe stress since hearing the news. Today is the fifth day and there is no update on his return,” said Rajani, who is pregnant.
She added she intends to board the Amritsar Mail from Howrah on Sunday evening, traveling through Pathankot to Ferozepur, though she was still struggling to secure a confirmed ticket.
“If I manage to get a ticket, I will leave today. If not, I will try again tomorrow or the day after,” she said, adding that three family members will likely accompany her.
According to BSF officials, Sahu, attached to the 182nd Battalion at the Ferozepur border, had been escorting a group of farmers when he stepped away to rest under a tree and inadvertently crossed into Pakistani territory.
The Indian and Pakistani border forces held a flag meeting Thursday night to negotiate his release, officials said. However, Sahu’s family reported that no further communication had been received since.
Rajani said if officials in Ferozepur cannot provide satisfactory answers, she plans to continue to Delhi to approach government authorities directly.
Meanwhile, Sahu’s parents, residents of the Harisabha area of Rishra in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, called on the government to intervene swiftly.
“I cannot tell you how tense I am. I plead with BSF officials to bring back my son,” said Sahu’s mother, her voice trembling with emotion.
The family said they are pinning their hopes on swift diplomatic efforts to ensure Sahu’s safe return home.
