Chandigarh, November 5, 2024: Punjab Cabinet Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak announced an ambitious plan today to expand Punjab’s tree and forest cover to 7.5% by 2030. Speaking after a review meeting with officials from the Forest Department and representatives from Japan, Kataruchak revealed that the Punjab government is seeking support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to help achieve this target.
The proposed project, valued at ₹792.88 crores, aims to tackle environmental challenges through agroforestry and biodiversity initiatives.
“Increasing tree cover and promoting biodiversity through agroforestry is a significant challenge for Punjab,” Kataruchak said, explaining the government’s strategy to work with JICA to roll out programs focused on expanding forested areas and conserving natural resources.
Key objectives of the project include increasing forest cover through agroforestry, conserving groundwater, boosting farmers’ income, and reducing air pollution from crop stubble burning. The project also features integrated watershed management in the Shivalik region, aimed at improving water resources and supporting ecological stability.
The initiative will include programs to develop agriculture and animal husbandry, enhancing local income opportunities while ensuring environmental sustainability. Promoting ecotourism, enhancing the state’s lakes to stimulate the local economy, and preserving biodiversity are also integral to the project’s scope.
The project is set for a five-year implementation period, beginning in the fiscal year 2025-26.
