Faridkot, December 5 — Police in Faridkot have arrested three people, including the wife of the victim, in connection with the killing of Gurwinder Singh in Sukhnewala village, a case officials say appears to stem from an alleged love affair.

Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Pragya Jain said the accused — Rupinder Kaur, her partner Harkanwalpreet Singh, and their associate Vishavjeet Singh — were taken into custody after the investigation “established a planned conspiracy.”

“The wife first told us that thieves had entered the house, looted valuables and killed her husband,” Jain said. “But during questioning, she admitted they had given him a suspected poisonous substance and later inflicted injuries.”

Gurwinder, from an NRI family, was found dead in his home on the intervening night of November 28 and 29. Villagers rushed over after Rupinder raised an alarm. Police found bruises on his back and signs that suggested possible strangulation. The final cause of death will be known after the post-mortem report, officials said.

Police said Rupinder married Gurwinder in 2023 and moved to Canada, where she was later deported in 2024. Investigators said she allegedly began a relationship abroad with Harkanwalpreet of Balluana village in Bathinda.

According to the police, Harkanwalpreet and Vishavjeet fled to Mumbai after the crime with valuables taken from the house. Vishavjeet surrendered in court three days ago, which led to the arrest of the third helper who arranged their escape.

In her complaint, Gurwinder’s sister, Manveer Kaur, told police that her brother had repeatedly voiced fear for his life and had spoken of Rupinder’s “illicit relationship.”
