MOHALI, June 3: A 42-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after enduring months of harassment from her husband and in-laws, according to a case registered by the Sohana police on Sunday. The woman, married in December 2023, was a resident of Badali village in Kharar.

Police acted on the statement of the deceased’s brother, who alleged that his sister had been mentally harassed by her husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law. All three have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

According to police officials, the woman had been in regular contact with her brother over the past few months, sharing her distress. “She told me several times that she was being harassed at home,” her brother said in his formal statement. “I kept reassuring her, asking her to remain calm and patient. I hoped things would settle with time.”

However, just days before the incident, she called again, sounding more desperate. “She said the situation was becoming unbearable and that she was thinking of ending her life,” he told police. “I tried to comfort her and promised to visit her soon and speak with the family.”

The tragedy unfolded on Sunday, when the brother received a call from his brother-in-law informing him that the woman had attempted suicide by hanging. She was rushed to the civil hospital in Phase 6, Mohali, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Following the complaint, the Sohana police registered a case and launched an investigation. “We are examining the allegations and statements. Further action will be taken based on evidence,” a police official said.

The case has once again drawn attention to the persistent issue of domestic harassment and its devastating consequences for women.
