CHANDIGARH, Dec. 24: The Punjab government has approved the immediate release of nearly ₹69 crore to upgrade infrastructure and diagnostic facilities at four major government medical colleges across the state, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said on Tuesday.
Chairing a review meeting of the Medical Education and Research Department, Mann ordered the release of ₹68.98 crore to modernise facilities and procure advanced medical equipment. He said the move was aimed at improving patient care and strengthening medical education in Punjab.
“Augmenting facilities in these medical colleges is the need of the hour to ensure quality treatment and diagnostic services for people,” Mann said. “It is imperative to equip them with high-end, world-class machinery so they can serve patients better.”
According to the allocation plan, Government Medical College, Amritsar, will receive ₹26.53 crore, while Government Medical College, Patiala, has been sanctioned ₹28.51 crore. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Medical Sciences, SAS Nagar (Mohali), will get ₹9.43 crore, and the PGI Satellite Centre in Ferozepur has been allotted ₹4.51 crore.
The chief minister directed officials to ensure that the funds are used for development works as well as the purchase of modern equipment. “These funds should be duly utilised in the larger public interest,” he said.
Mann also stressed that the upgradation work must be completed within a fixed timeline so that improved healthcare services are made available at affordable costs. He said strengthening medical institutions would directly benefit patients and medical students alike.
