Chandigarh/Ferozepur, Sept 14 — Punjab Police on Sunday said it had foiled a major cross-border drug smuggling attempt in Ferozepur, seizing 15.7 kilograms of heroin and arresting one person. Officials said the network is being operated by an inmate lodged in Kapurthala jail.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the arrest came during a swift intelligence-led operation, part of the state government’s ongoing drive against narcotics. “The consignment was sent by Pakistan-based smugglers, while the network is being handled from inside Kapurthala jail,” Yadav noted. “Investigations are on to trace both forward and backward linkages.”

The accused, identified as Sonu Singh of Habibwala village in Ferozepur, was intercepted at a naka near Dulchi Ke village. Officials said he has no previous criminal record.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ferozepur Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said the police had received reliable input that the suspect had retrieved a heroin consignment and was transporting it from Palla Megha towards Ferozepur city. “Acting swiftly, teams of CIA Ferozepur, under the supervision of SP (D) Manjeet Singh and DSP (D) Barjinder Singh, carried out the operation and arrested the accused,” Sidhu said.

The SSP added that further arrests and recoveries are expected. “This is just the beginning. Our teams are pursuing every lead in this case,” he said.

Police registered FIR No. 252 dated September 13 under Section 21 of the NDPS Act at Sadar Ferozepur police station.
