Ludhiana, June 8 — Two people were killed and another sustained serious injuries after a fire engulfed a paint factory in the city’s Anngarh locality on Sunday morning. The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed, officials said.

The blaze began around 11 a.m., prompting an immediate response from district administration and police authorities. Nearby homes were swiftly evacuated as a precautionary measure.

“Five fire tenders were deployed to control the flames,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Amit Sarin, who was overseeing the emergency operations. “The cause of the fire is still unknown. Once the situation is under control, we will investigate whether the factory was operating legally,” he added.

Police confirmed that one person suffered serious burn injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. “He is undergoing medical care, and further details will be shared once we have more information,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Vishaljit Singh.

The extent of damage to the factory and surrounding area has not yet been assessed. Firefighting teams worked through the afternoon to contain the blaze, which sent thick plumes of smoke across the neighborhood.

Local authorities said that an inquiry will be launched to determine the cause of the fire and possible violations of safety norms or regulations at the facility.

The incident has raised questions over industrial safety and regulation in densely populated areas. Residents of Anngarh expressed concern about the presence of hazardous units near residential zones. “We were terrified,” said a local resident who was among those evacuated. “The smoke was everywhere, and we feared it could spread to our homes.”

As the cooling operations continued into the evening, officials reiterated that priority would be given to identifying the deceased and verifying the factory’s compliance status.

Further updates are awaited following the completion of the preliminary investigation.
