Chandigarh, Aug 10: — Authorities fined 286 vehicles and impounded nine during a statewide security operation on Saturday aimed at monitoring vehicles entering and exiting the region to curb activities of anti-social elements, drug traffickers, and bootleggers.
Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla said the operation, named OPS Seal-XVIII, involved inspection of 2,464 vehicles across 10 inter-state border districts, with over 600 police personnel deployed. Checkpoints were established at 71 entry and exit points under the supervision of inspectors and deputy superintendents of police (DSPs).
“These districts share boundaries with four border states and the Union Territory of Chandigarh,” Shukla explained, listing Pathankot, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Fazilka, Rupnagar, SAS Nagar, Patiala, Sangrur, Mansa, Hoshiarpur, and Bathinda as the focus areas.
During the drive, police registered four FIRs and arrested nine individuals linked to criminal activities.
In parallel, the ongoing cordon and search operation (CASO) against drug trafficking marked its 161st day on Saturday. Raids were conducted at 403 locations statewide, resulting in the arrest of 87 drug smugglers and the filing of 57 FIRs.
“The total number of drug smugglers arrested has now reached 25,264,” Shukla said. Officials also seized 2.2 kilograms of heroin and 2.1 kilograms of opium during the raids.
The comprehensive crackdown reflects continued efforts by law enforcement to tighten security and prevent the flow of illicit substances and unlawful activities across the region.
