Chandigarh: Three cross-FIRs have been registered following the death of a 41-year-old advocate, Neeraj Hans, who allegedly died after being punched in the chest at the District Courts Complex parking lot in Sector 43 on Monday evening.

A former president of the District Bar Association has been booked in connection with the incident. Hans was taken to PGIMER, where he passed away early Tuesday morning.

The cause of the altercation is still unclear.

The first FIR was filed by Hans’ brother, Hardeep Hans, under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 3(5) (criminal act by several persons with common intent) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

He accused advocates Ravinder Singh, also known as Jolly, Gurpreet Singh Gopa, and Satish Mor of causing Neeraj’s death after Ravinder allegedly punched him, leading to chest pain. The exact manner of death is still pending confirmation from doctors. The second FIR was lodged by Ravinder, who claimed advocates Bharti and Navdeep Sandhu assaulted him, escalating the conflict.

He filed the complaint under Sections 299 (outraging religious feelings) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt with intent to harm) of the BNS. The third FIR was registered by advocate Bharti, who accused Ravinder of assaulting her, leading to charges under Sections 74 (assault with intent to outrage a woman’s modesty) and 351(2) of the BNS.
