Ropar, July 25: Three gangsters wanted in connection with a July 4 murder in Amritsar (Rural) were arrested Wednesday afternoon following a brief encounter with police near Bhindran Nagar in Ropar district.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gulneet Singh Khurana, a team from the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) Ropar, acting on a tip-off, located the suspects hiding in a dilapidated building along the banks of the Sutlej River.
“The building was surrounded around 1:30 pm. As police approached, one of the suspects opened fire, hitting a police vehicle. In response, our team fired back and managed to apprehend all three accused,” said SSP Khurana.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Gurvinder Singh alias Bhola of Channanke village, Navtej Singh alias Teji of Jabbowal village, and Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi of Sran village—all from Amritsar district.
Bhola sustained a gunshot wound to the right thigh during the exchange and was initially taken to Ropar Civil Hospital. He has since been referred to PGI Chandigarh for further treatment.
Police recovered a 9 mm Glock pistol, one live cartridge, a magazine, and three empty shells from Bhola.
SSP Khurana said the trio was involved in the murder of 28-year-old Jugraj Singh outside the gate of Gurdwara Baba Buddha Sahib in Channanke on the morning of July 4. “After the killing, the accused fled and had been evading arrest. Our teams were conducting continuous raids across the region to locate them,” he said.
A fresh case has been registered at Nurpur Bedi police station under Section 109 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Arms Act. An earlier FIR under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) BNS-2023 and Sections 25/54/59 of the Arms Act remains active at Mehta Police Station in Amritsar (Rural).
The accused are being presented in court, where police will seek remand to probe further links and possible accomplices, the SSP added.
