New Delhi, 23 October, 2024: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi filed her nomination for the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll on Wednesday, marking her electoral debut. In a speech to a large crowd in Kalpetta, she pointed her extensive political experience, stating, “I have 35 years of experience in the political arena, beginning at the age of 17 when I campaigned for my late father, Rajiv Gandhi, in 1989.”

Her remarks came a day after BJP candidate Navya Haridas claimed greater experience in representing constituents than Priyanka. During the nomination event, prominent party leaders were present, including Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Priyanka expressed her honor in being chosen to represent the people of Wayanad, acknowledging the resilience of the community during recent landslides. “I am deeply touched by the courage shown by the people of Wayanad during such difficult times,” she said.

Rahul Gandhi also addressed the audience, stating that if Priyanka wins, the people of Wayanad would effectively have two MPs in Parliament, including himself. “I will be the unofficial MP for the people of Wayanad,” he remarked, highlighting his previous tenure representing the constituency from 2019 to 2024.

The need for the by-election arose after Rahul decided to vacate the Wayanad seat, having won from both Wayanad and Rae Bareli in the recent Lok Sabha elections. He urged voters to support Priyanka, saying, “Take care of my sister and vote for her in Parliament.”

Kharge added that Priyanka’s presence in Wayanad symbolizes her commitment to serving the hill district. “She is not just here to file her nomination but as a relentless champion for the people. Bless her, and she will deliver results,” he stated.

Following her speech, Priyanka proceeded to the collectorate to officially file her nomination papers, accompanied by Sonia, Rahul, Kharge, and AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal. She will be contesting against LDF candidate Sathyan Mokeri and BJP’s Navya Haridas. Voting for the Wayanad bypoll is scheduled for November 13.
