MUKTSAR, April 20— Congress leader and former Sardulgarh MLA Ajit Inder Singh Mofar’s nephew, Vinay Partap Brar, and grand-nephew, Suraj Partap Brar, were shot dead late Saturday evening at Abul Khurana village near Malout, reportedly in connection with a long-standing land dispute.
The father-son duo had returned from Chandigarh earlier in the day and were visiting their agricultural land along Lalbai Road when they were gunned down, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Muktsar SSP Akhil Chaudhary confirmed the double murder, saying, “A man and his son have been murdered, but it is too early to comment further.”
Vinay, the son of Ajit Inder Singh Mofar’s sister, was considered an influential landlord in the area, though he and his son had been residing in Chandigarh and were largely disconnected from the local population. “They had limited interaction with the village. The family has seen violent incidents before,” said a group of residents who gathered near the crime scene.
Family members of the deceased said they were shaken by the killings but vowed to pursue the case. “Though we had differences with my cousin Vinay, my father and I are heading to the village. His daughter will now have to face a legal battle she’s unprepared for—she hasn’t even lived in the village,” said Bikram Singh Mofar, son of Ajit Inder Singh Mofar, in a phone conversation. “We will do everything we can to help her and take this case forward.”
Police have yet to identify suspects or make arrests. Investigators are examining the family’s past disputes and previous violent incidents for possible leads.
