The Birth of Parshuram
Lord Vishnu is considered to be the protector of the world, who has taken 24 incarnations from time to time for the welfare of the people. Out of the 24 incarnations, there are 10 major incarnations, one of which is the Parashurama incarnation. This is the sixth incarnation of Vishnu ji, who freed the earth from sin by killing tyrannical kings many times. Therefore, Parshuram ji is considered to be the fierce incarnation of Vishnu ji, whose worship gives knowledge, wealth, courage and bravery etc.
The story of the 21 killings of Kshatriyas
According to mythological stories, Lord Vishnu took the sixth incarnation as Parashuram to teach a lesson to the arrogant Sahastrabahu. King Sahastrarjun of Mahishmati city belonged to the Kshatriya community. The king of this clan was the son of Kartavirya and Queen Kaushik. Sahastrarjun’s real name was Arjun. He performed severe penance to please Lord Dattatreya. Dattatreya was pleased with his penance and asked him to ask for a boon, so he received the blessing of 10,000 hands from Dattatreya. After this, his name changed from Arjun to Sahastrarjun.
He is also called Karteyveer because he is the son of Sahastrabahu and King Kartavirya. It is said that Mahishmati emperor Sahastrarjun became so arrogant that he crossed all the limits of religion. The entire public was troubled by his atrocities and misconduct. He was so full of pride that he did not even spare the Vedas, Puranas and religious scriptures. He used to insult Brahmins by calling them wrong, destroy the ashrams of sages and kill them. His atrocities increased so much that for his pleasure and entertainment, he started kidnapping helpless women and destroying their chastity.
Sahasrarjuna’s greed started increasing
Once Sahastrarjuna, along with his entire army, crossed the jungles and reached the ashram of Jamdagni Rishi to rest. Maharishi Jamdagni considered Sahastrarjuna as a guest of the ashram and left no stone unturned in welcoming him. It is said that Rishi Jamdagni had a wonderful cow named Kamdhenu with divine qualities, which he had received from Devraj Indra. With the help of that cow, Maharishi arranged food for the entire army in a short time. Seeing such extraordinary qualities of Kamdhenu, Sahastrarjuna started feeling that his royal pleasures were not enough in front of the sage.
He had a desire to possess such a wonderful cow. He asked for Kamdhenu from sage Jamdagni. Sage Jamdagni refused to give Kamdhenu, saying that Kamdhenu was the only means of managing the ashram and livelihood. On this, Sahastrarjuna got angry and destroyed the ashram of sage Jamdagni and started taking Kamdhenu away. Then Kamdhenu got freed from Sahastrarjuna’s hands and went towards heaven.

According to the calculation of the Vedic calendar, Lord Parshuram was born on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh in ancient times.
