Mandi Gobingarh, June 18: Karambir Singh, alias Lovely Nihang, who allegedly severed the wrists of a 24-year-old youth in Mandi Gobindgarh, was arrested on Tuesday, police confirmed.
Rakesh Yadav, SP (Investigation), told reporters that the accused had been impersonating a Nihang for the past six months and using the guise to extort people. “He had no affiliation with any Nihang sect. He was misusing the attire and tarnishing the image of a revered community,” Yadav said.
The victim, Jatin Walia of Master Colony, was attacked on Monday in a brutal act that shocked the local community.
According to police, Karambir Singh initially claimed he was acting against drug peddlers, but investigation and a dope test confirmed that he himself was a drug user. “He pretended to be a moral vigilante, but the truth is he was consuming intoxicants. His actions are criminal, not righteous,” the officer said.
The Nihang community has distanced itself from the accused and demanded stringent action. “We have received a clear message from the Nihang sect condemning his actions,” Yadav added.
Police said the arrest follows firm instructions from senior leadership. “The DGP and SSP have made it absolutely clear—anyone who takes the law into their own hands will face strict action,” said Yadav.
