CHANDIGARH, July 5 — Two days before her engagement, a 26-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide inside her hostel room on the Panjab University campus Friday morning, sending shockwaves across the academic community.

The deceased, identified as Amandeep Kaur, was the daughter of a senior university staff member and had been working on a temporary assignment at the university. Her engagement was scheduled for July 6.

The incident came to light when her mother, after repeated knocks on the door went unanswered, entered the room and found Amandeep hanging. Police officials confirmed that she was declared dead at the scene.

A team from Sector 11 police station, led by campus post in-charge SI Naveen Kumar and SHO Jaiveer Rana, arrived at the spot shortly after. A forensic team was also called in to collect evidence before the body was moved to the mortuary for autopsy.

Inside the room, officers recovered a handwritten note believed to have been left by Amandeep. “I’m sorry. I’m not able to handle the situation. I am ending this of my own will,” it read.

“This note suggests she was under considerable emotional strain. At this point, there are no signs of external provocation or foul play,” said SHO Rana. Police have so far ruled out abetment, but emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. “We’re speaking with her family and close acquaintances to understand the circumstances that may have led to this decision,” he added.

No suspicious items or signs of forced entry were found in the room, sources in the investigation said. The woman’s family has not alleged foul play, police confirmed.

The incident has stirred a wave of grief on campus. Amandeep’s colleagues and university staff described her as quiet and responsible. “She always seemed composed. We never imagined something like this,” said a fellow university employee.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of seeking help during times of mental and emotional crisis. “Support is available. Anyone feeling overwhelmed should reach out—there are people who care and resources to help,” a police spokesperson said.

The final post-mortem report is awaited, and officials maintained that all procedural steps will be followed to ensure clarity in the case.
