MOHALI, August 1 — A 60-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in Gharuan, Kharar, after enduring repeated abuse from his younger son, family members told police. The man, a father of four, was found hanging from an electricity pole near his home on Wednesday morning.

Police said a message was found scribbled on the deceased’s leg that read, “My son is responsible for this.” His elder son, in a formal complaint, alleged that his younger brother, an alcoholic, frequently harassed and physically assaulted their parents.

“On the night of July 29, he came home drunk and again abused our parents. My father left the house, and when he didn’t return by morning, we started searching for him,” the elder son said. “In the morning, I saw him hanging from a pole near our house.”

Police have registered a case under Section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The body was sent for a post-mortem examination. No arrests have been made as of yet, and further investigation is underway.

In a separate case reported the same day, a 20-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide following an argument with her husband in Sector 82, Mohali.

According to police, the woman lived with her husband in a caretaker’s accommodation in Sector 82. Her husband told officers that she wished to accompany him to the market around 7 pm on Wednesday, but he asked her to stay back, citing the long walk.

“When I returned around 9 pm, the room was locked from inside. I broke it open and found her hanging from an angle iron,” he stated in his report.

She was rushed to the civil hospital in Phase 6, where doctors declared her brought dead. Following a post-mortem examination, her body was handed over to her family on Thursday evening.

Police have begun inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
