Mohali, September 26: A 35-year-old gym owner was shot and injured in Mohali early Thursday when two men on a motorcycle opened fire on his parked car in the Phase 2 market near Franco Hotel, police said.
The victim, identified as Vicky, was inside his Maruti Baleno when the assailants drove up around 5 a.m. and began shooting without warning, according to eyewitnesses. “They came on a sports bike and started firing straight at the car. Everyone around ran for cover,” said one passerby, recalling the chaos as multiple gunshots echoed through the market.
CCTV footage reviewed by investigators showed that at least five rounds were discharged before the suspects fled. One bullet struck Vicky in the leg, leaving him bleeding inside the car. Eyewitnesses rushed him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The aftermath of the attack left visible scars at the scene. Bloodstains were seen on the pavement, a broken car mirror lay on the ground, and fragments of glass and debris littered the parking area, underscoring the sudden violence that shattered the early morning calm.
Local residents said the incident had shaken their sense of security. The market near Franco Hotel, one of Mohali’s oldest commercial hubs, is usually regarded as a safe locality. “It is worrying that such an attack could happen here and the shooters just rode away,” said a shopkeeper who arrived soon after the firing.
Police sealed off the area and impounded the victim’s vehicle for forensic examination. “We are examining the footage and speaking to witnesses. The investigation is underway,” said Jaswant Singh, a police officer at the spot.
The attackers remain at large.
